The road distance from leh to kargil by road is 214 kms.
The only way to reach Kargil is by roads. You can take a Taxi or Bus.
The main pass between Srinagar and Kargil is like to to be blocked by snow from November to May. However kargil by road
and Drass is open almost throughout the year. The road between Leh and Kargil by road too is open almost throughout the year.
The road into Suru Valley is functional around the year till Sangra. After Sangra it is prone to landslides between December and March. The main pass to Zanskar is blocked from November to mid June.
During this period it is possible to walk on the snow (or the frozen river) between Kargil and Zanskar depending on weather conditions.
When the roads are functional government buses ply between Kargil and Padum (Zanskar) on alternate days to most places in Suru Valley (Upto Panikhar) twice a day and to places on the national highway at least once a day. The bus to Zanskar serves Rangdum as well. The road to Sangra Panikhar – Zanskar is closed between November and June. The other roads are functional more or less thoughout the year.
Bus Service
Daily bus services of all classes operate to and from Kargil by road to Srinagar, Gujarat, Amritsar, Shimla, Manali, Rawalpindi.
Super deluxe, deluxe/ video coaches and A-class buses to Srinagar operate from the railway station and the Tourist Reception Centre. B-class buses to Srinagar leave from the General Bus Stand. Besides, some travel agencies also operate deluxe / video coaches on the main routes.
Taxis
Special Tourist Taxi Association, Tourist Reception Centre. The taxis available are: Ambassador, Sumo, Tavera, Qualis , A/C as well as non-A/c etc.
Coaches
The J&K Tourism Development Corporation (J&K TDC)and the J&K State Road Transport Corporation (J&K SRTC) operate luxury coaches. For reservation and bookings, contact the J&K TDC/SRTC offices.
Tourist Taxis
Tata Sumos and other SUVs operate between Kargil by road and Jammu, Srinagar on shared seat basis. These are mostly run by private Tour operators. Taxis for local sightseeing or to visit any tourist destination can be hired at Kargil from the Special Tourist Taxi Association, Tourist Reception Centre. For information and tariff, check with the Tourism Department information centre, J&K TDC offices and J&K SRTC offices, all in the TRC complex.
