About Kargil, Kargil is a district of Ladakh region in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. Kargil lies next to the Line of Control facing Gilgit–Baltistan to the west, and Kashmir valley to the south. Zanskar is part of Kargil district along with Suru, Wakha and Dras valleys about Kargil. Kargil was at the core of a conflict between India and Pakistan in 1999. It was prepared as a separate district in 1979.

Kargil district is nestled in the Himalayas, giving it a cold, moderate climate about Kargil. Summers are warm with cool nights, while winters are long and cold with temperatures often dipping to -40 °C (-40 °F) with recorded temperatures of -60 °C (-76 °F) in the little town of Dras, located some 56 km (35 mi) from the Kargil town. The Zanskar plateau is even colder, making it thus a near-uninhabitable place for humans, except for the hardy Khampas. The entire Kargil district is spread over 14,086 km2 (5,439 sq mi). The Suru River flows through the district.

The district has a Kargil population density of 10 people per square kilometre (26 /sq mi). Kargil population growth rate over the decade 2001-2011 was 20.18%. Kargil has a sex ratio of 775 females for every 1000 males, and a literacy rate of 74.49%.

About Kargil history, Kargil is situated at a distance of 204 KM from Srinagar towards Leh city.Kargil is recognized as the land of Agas in today's world. Kargil has a population of 1.25 lakhs which is spreaded over an area of 14,086 Sq. Km. The word Kargil is derived from the two words Khar and rKil. Khar means castle and rKil means center. In local language Gar means anywhere and Khil means a center place where people could stay. After many years Khar rKil came to recognized as Kargil. During the year of 1979, Kargil became a break up district in the Ladakh region when it was bifurcated from the earstwhile Leh ditrict. Kargil experience moderate climate like other areas in Himalayas. During the months of April to September Kargil temperature is humid with cool nights. This is the only kargil climate time which is mostly good for visiting Kargil. Winter season of kargil are very long and cool and the kargil temperature dropps to -40 °C.
