Wolves

Wildlife in Ladakh is very amazing and you will get to know about Ladakh mammals. Wolves are the two sub species of wolf in India and it is found in Ladakh. Shanko is the Ladakhi name of the wolves. The wolf is deliberated in large number of killing of livestock. Wolf is the big threats for humans and livestock. The Shanko are met in Rupshu, Zanskar, Markha and Changthang plains.

Habitat

The wolf lives in an open area and they slope down to hills in winter and rise to the snowline in summer. Shanko are seen individually but sometimes they are seen in groups. The food of the wolf is pika, hare, rodents and birds. There are total 300 wolves in Ladakh and there are various varieties. There are mostly the detested killers in Ladakh.

Characteristics

The hair color of the Shanko is sandy brown, grey-brown, dark grey and black. The tail is black-tipped and it is less than the body size. The body of the wolf is covered with thick and bushy coat in winter and the physique is thin legs and has V-shaped head.
